Nynäshamn’s restaurant gymnasium is a building with multiple hybrid functions that strives towards sustainability through a combination of education, gardening, cooking and human encounters. In class, the students learn about sustainability and the cooking is done using produce that comes from the greenhouse which surrounds parts of the building. The gymnasium is situated in close proximity to Nynäsgård’s railway station alongside Centralgatan which functions as a central connection between the north of Nynäshamn and the city centre. A public building here helps to create a more connected Nynäshamn with activities that go beyond the traditional city centre. The volume of the building mainly comes from the lines present at the site and relations to surrounding buildings. The greenhouse surrounds the south and west side of the building with one private section for the schools gardening and one public section. The building has five stories, including a basement. The communication occurs in a central staircase and in stairs and balconies that surround the building and allows for movement and levels inside the greenhouse. The entrance floor is the most public and houses a restaurant and an auditorium with multiple secondary uses. The second floor is for cooking lessons, the third has traditional classrooms and rooms for teachers and the fourth has a library as well as another kitchen. The building is entirely in wood and glass where the plants are allowed to be a big part of the expression of the building.
