Användningen av deepfakes inom pornografi : En etnografisk studie kring medvetenheten om och följderna av deepfakes i pornografi

The phenomenon deepfake was created in 2017 and has since developed and received a lot of attention, especially in pornography thus the absolute majority of all deepfakes on the internet are of pornographic content, with 90% of those who are exposed to deepfakes are woman. The purpose of this essay is to investigate young women’s awareness of deepfakes as well as how the phenomenon used in porn contexts may affect young women’s behavior on social media and other platforms. The essay also intends to focus on how deepfakes are used in relation to porn as we believe that there is a need for increased knowledge, research and regulation regarding this subject. The research is based on a quantitative method in the form of a web survey and a qualitative method with five semi-structured interviews. The conclusion is that young women's awareness of deepfakes is interpreted as relatively low, as the majority did not know what the phenomenon was and others hold only little knowledge regarding the use of deepfakes in porn. The study participants were affected by the knowledge about deepfakes with the majority who feared being exposed to it themselves and a large part of the respondents wanted to limit their posts on social media and regulate confidentiality settings on social media platforms. The study discusses the topic with theories about Foucault’s panopticon and power/knowledge as well as the privacy paradox.
