How are these perceptions shaped by education, work experience, and changes in the labor market? Purpose: This study examines how job seekers perceive competence requirements within the accounting profession in an increasingly digitalized work environment. The purpose is to increase understanding of which competencies are considered central and how these perceptions are shaped in relation to education, work experience, and changes in the labor market. Method: The study is based on a qualitative, deductive approach, where empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 job seekers within the accounting field. The material was analyzed using thematic analysis, focusing on hard skills, soft skills, and the concept of skill gap. Conclusion: The study concludes that competence requirements within the accounting profession have become broader and more complex. This development may lead job seekers to misinterpret these requirements and either underestimate or overestimate their own competence, which can negatively affect their opportunities to enter the labor market.
