Att ljuga eller att inte ljuga? : En kvantitativ studie om studenters användning av intrycksstyrning och faking under arbetsintervjun

The job interview is a central part of the recruitment process, where applicants are expected to present themselves in a favourable way. In this situation, the distinction between impression management and faking may be difficult to draw. The aim of this study is to examine job-seeking students’ and recent graduates’ self-reported use of impression management and faking in job interviews. The study also aims to analyse the relationship between impression management and faking, and to examine whether this relationship remains when previous interview experience is included as a control variable. This study is based on a quantitative approach and uses survey data collected through ORU Survey. The sample consists of 163 valid responses from students and recent graduates. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, and linear regression analysis. The results show that respondents reported a higher use of impression management than faking. Impression management had a mean value of 4.31, while faking had a mean value of 2.66 on a five-point scale. The results also show a positive and statistically significant relationship between impression management and faking. This relationship remained significant when previous interview experience was included as a control variable, while previous interview experience did not show a statistically significant relationship with faking. The study concludes that impression management and faking are related but not identical phenomena. Impression management appears to be common among job-seeking students and recent graduates, while faking is reported to a lesser extent.
