Sammanfattning

This Master Thesis is an iconographical and iconological study of how the Council of Trent and the Counter-Reformation influenced the ways of depicting St. Mary Magdalene in the Roman-Catholic art in Italy during theRenaissance and the Baroque. During the Counter-Reformation, Mary Magdalene became an important symbol of love and penance, whichwas, in different ways, reflected in the Italian art. 16 oil paintings are analysed according to Erwin Panofsky’s three-level method. Textiles, colours, attributes, and motifs are being focused in this study.
