Sammanfattning

Authoritarian forces are widely spread throughout the society, which threatens democracy in a number of ways and the compliance of the human rights. Authoritarian regimes were given greater focus in Sweden’s latest curriculum (Gy 25), in contrast to the former (Gy 11). Thereby is there a chance that this also gives greater focus in civic learning materials, made during Gy 25. This study aims therefore to study both how authoritarian regimes are represented in civic learning materials made during Gy 25, in relation to the study’s theories, and how authoritarian regimes are represented in civic learning materials made during Gy 11 and Gy 25, if any development of the content is a fact. The used theories are Juan J. Linz’ theory of authoritarian regimes, Marlies Glasius’ theory of authoritarian practices and Robert A. Dahl’s theory of a democratic process for a comparison against authoritarian regimes. The present study used both quantitative and qualitative content analysis for answering the research questions. This study found that authoritarian regimes are represented in different ways in civic learning materials made during Gy 25, but usually that authoritarian regimes tend to use violence against its citizens, be disrespectful of free elections and other participating parties, nevertheless control the media and information through propaganda, censorship and threaten the press. The results highly relate to all theories, together with established research in this area. The main difference between learning materials made during Gy 11 in contrast to Gy 25 is that the former focuses more on the citizens’ perspective and how they are affected under an authoritarian regime and the latter gives a more objective perspective of the phenomenon.
