Sammanfattning

This study aims to examine social media and influencers in relation to cosmetic procedures and beauty ideals. The aim of the study is therefore to investigate how the female body is constructed and how beauty ideals are motivated, presented and normalized on social media. To investigate this, I use sociological theories with a feminist perspective on discipline, self-monitoring, beauty ideals, respectability and social media. The questions are as follows: (1) How are bodily discipline and self-monitoring constructed and expressed in influencer content about cosmetic procedures? (2) How can the body be understood as a project in influencer content about cosmetic procedures? (3) How are cosmetic procedures legitimized and normalized on social media? (4) How are cosmetic procedures presented as an individual choice in relation to beauty ideals and social norms? To answer the questions, digital ethnography and autoethnography were used. The material consists of influencer videos from the app TikTok and my own field notes. The study's findings show how the female body, through self-monitoring and discipline, can be understood as a constant improvement project where normalized ideals are presented as individual. The study also shows that consumption of content about cosmetic procedures can be a contributing factor to the surveillance of one's own body. TikTok thus functions as an arena where women monitor both themselves and others.
