Sammanfattning

The purpose of this study is to provide insights into social studies teachers' experiences when teaching about issues pertaining to sexuality, consent and relationships in year 7-9 of upper secondary school. Througout the study, sexuality, consent and relationships has been abbreviated to SSR. The research question for this study is 'what experiences do teachers have of teaching about issues pertaining to sexuality, consent and relationships in social studies?'. The study's result are based on eight qualitative one-on-one interviews with teachers that teach social studies in year 7-9 of upper secondary school. The interviews were then analyzed from a lifeworld hermeneutic perspective which means that the teachers' experiences were the focus of the study. What emerged from the interviews was that the teachers' attitudes, approaches and relationships with students are fundamental to teaching issues related to SSR. All of the interviewed teachers, except one, claim that they have seen an increase in homophobic attitudes among students, but this was most apparent at schools located in rural areas. Teachers who worked at schools with joint planning or an overarching consensus on issues related to SSR reported that they included these issues in their teaching to a greater extent than teachers where this was not the case. Several of the teachers had experienced that the issues related to SSR had been sensitive or controversial to teach thus argued that discussing sensitive issues related to SSR are an important part of the school's democratic mission.
