Digital Support for Nutritional Health in LSS Residential Care : Nutritional Status of People with Intellectual Disabilities Living in LSS Residential Homes

People with intellectual disabilities living in LSS residential care are at increased risk of nutritional ill health and problems are often not addressed until they have become severe. To support early detection, FUB Uppsala-Knivsta has developed a paper-based nutrition form, which now needs to be made available in a digital format for use by residents, staff and decision-makers. The objective of this project was to explore how a digital solution can support the tracking and monitoring of nutritional health in this group, as well as to investigate which design choices make a system usable for first-time users and motivate action when negative trends are identified. The existing paper form was digitized into a web-based prototype, designed using the concepts of usability, persuasive systems design and digital nudging. A usability test was conducted with first-time users to evaluate how easily the system could be understood and used. The project shows that combining usability-focused design with persuasive design principles can support nutritional health monitoring. The prototype is not a final system, but a foundation for further development.
