Sammanfattning

This thesis compares the security policies of Sweden and Norway between 2014 and 2024 using constructivism and rational choice theory. The study examines how historical experiences, national identities and strategic calculations influenced the two countries’ responses to the changing security situation in Europe after Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Special focus is placed on Sweden’s decision to apply for NATO membership in 2022. The findings show that both strategic interests and identity based factors shaped security policy decisions, while increasing geopolitical tensions contributed to closer Nordic and NATO cooperation.
