The digitalization of industry has transformed how organizations manage production, with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems playing a key role. In the process industry, where flows are complex and demands on efficiency, precision, and sustainability are high, ERP systems support integration and coordination across departments. This enables better visibility, quicker decisions, and more reliable planning. Despite the benefits, ERP systems often present challenges such as resource- intensive adaptation, user resistance, and difficulties aligning with existing processes. This study investigates how ERP systems are used for detailed production planning in two Swedish process industry companies. Through a qualitative case study of two companies, the research examines the practical application of digital tools, the benefits they offer, and the everyday challenges encountered. The objective is to bridge the gap between theory and practice by examining the usage of ERP systems within the process industry. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with key planning personnel, observations, and secondary sources. Respondents were selected for their experience and decision-making roles to ensure more reliable data quality. Thematic analysis of interviews allowed comparison between the companies to uncover patterns and areas for improvement. Findings show ERP systems support capacity planning, internal communication, and coordination of production and delivery. However, effective use relies on factors like user training and system customization. In conclusion, the study offers insights into ERP use in detailed planning within the process industry, useful for practitioners aiming to improve operations and for developers tailoring ERP solutions to industry needs.
