Introduction. The focus of this master’s thesis is Girjegumpi, a library which integrates a broad spectrum of art forms and creative methods, while challenging traditionally Western systems of knowledge organisation. The study explores how this alternative, nomadic approach to library practice can broaden perspectives on the role and function of libraries in general. Initiated by artist and architect Joar Nango, Girjegumpi specialises in topics related to Sámi architecture, a category identified by Nango as lacking in the discourse of contemporary architecture. Here Girjegumpi will be analysed from the perspective of library and information science. Theory and method. The theoretical and methodological framework used is actor-network theory (ANT) as formulated by Bruno Latour. Through written observations, photographs and semi-structured interviews with Joar Nango as well as with curators and librarians, we follow Girjegumpi on its journey from the Venice Architecture Biennale to Bodø via Stockholm. This is a case study that traces a myriad of both human and non-human actors, mapping the activities and functions of a library that doesn’t look like a library. Analysis. The study explores the operations of this alternative library practice as a manifestation of pluralism, and poses questions as to how it relates to standardised libraries. Results. The results show how Girjegumpi passes through locations, being transformed but also transforming its visitors and the hosting institutions on its journey. Conclusion. Girjegumpi is a platform with potential to alter perspectives on how library functions can be performed, what can be perceived as knowledge, and how this knowledge can be ordered. The performative aspect of how Girjegumpi becomes a library, playfully incorporating new categories, may serve as inspiration to both library and museum professionals. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.
