The November 2022 launch of the ChatGPT generative AI (GAI) sparked extensive discussions in the publishing and book industries. This technology challenges the unique creative ability of humans and raises concerns about its impact on text-based professions. Discussions include ethical uses and copyright. This study focuses on the use of GAI in translations of adult fiction by traditional publishers, based on qualitative interviews with publishers and translators. The subject is extremely topical and has been widely discussed over the past year since some Swedish publishers have started to turn to GAI translations as a solution to declining print runs. The study examines whether GAI translations can be applied to all genres of writing and the potential impact of GAI translations on reader appreciation, the Swedish language, and the breadth of publishing. Theories from John B. Thompson and Naomi S. Baron are used to analyse the interview responses. The study is a time marker for the rapid changes in the industry, with the results showing a need for some urgent regulation around the use of GAI and opening up for further study into differences in quality and how this might impact future book sales.
