Sammanfattning

This bachelor thesis explores the influence of three main factors on the static frictionbetween wood and steel: wood fiber orientation, climate conditions, and steel surfacetexture. The primary material examined is birch plywood and ordinary plywood, withadditional tests performed on OSB and particle board. A total of 1800 tests wereconducted under controlled laboratory conditions to determine the static coefficient offriction across different combinations of surface roughness, humidity levels, and fiberorientations. Two steel surfaces were used – one polished (smooth) and one sandblasted(rough) – under dry, normal, and wet environmental conditions. The findings reveal that the highest friction occurs between wet wood and rough steelsurfaces. Although fiber orientation affects friction, its influence is relatively minorcompared to surface texture and moisture level. Interestingly, dry samples often producehigher friction than normally humid ones, especially on smooth steel surfaces. The results align with existing literature and underline the importance of systematictesting to obtain reliable friction coefficients for engineering applications.
