Från Hinder Till Möjligheter : En studie om faktorer som formar kvinnors språkliga progression

This study investigates how women with slow progression within Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) describe their language learning in relation to their everyday lives. With a particular focus on social conditions and opportunities for language use, the study uses a qualitative interview approach to examine how women experience participation in SFI and how everyday life shapes their possibilities to learn and use Swedish. The findings show that the women’s language learning is strongly influenced by factors beyond the classroom. Participants describe how everyday responsibilities, limited access to Swedish-speaking environments, and experiences of confidence or caution when speaking affect their language use. While many women express a strong desire to learn Swedish and improve their situation, their opportunities to participate linguistically differ depending on social, structural, and emotional conditions. Language learning is therefore described as uneven and closely connected to the women’s lived circumstances. By highlighting these experiences, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of how language learning in SFI is shaped by everyday life and social positioning. The findings provide insight into how linguistic participation is influenced by access to social arenas and perceived opportunities, and how slow progression in SFI cannot be understood solely in terms of individual effort or motivation.
