Från stillbild till principskiss: en studie av standardiserad dokumentation av skrädning i virkesberedning

This thesis presents a method for documenting timber hewing in wood preparation through standardized schematic drawings based on still images from publicly available video material. The purpose of this thesis is to develop and test whether this form of documentation has the ability to make it easier to see and compare the bodily details of the work process. The study focuses on grip, grip changes, working height and positioning. While information on timber hewing is already available in craft literature, manuals and previous degree projects, there is a lack of information on how the bodily details of the work can be documented in a systematic and comparable way. The study was carried out as a qualitative document study based on publicly available videos from digital platforms. Nine cases were selected through a visibility-based sampling process, and fourteen key moments were chosen for further analysis. These were documented through sequence sheets and translated into schematic drawings in order to reduce visual noise and make relevant relations between body, tool and workpiece clearer. The study shows that this method can make grip, grip changes, working height and positioning easier to compare, but only when the source material offers sufficient visibility, image quality and limited occlusion. The analysis identified a limited but distinct range of recurring grips and a smaller number of observable grip changes. It also showed recurring tendencies in how grip relates to working height and positioning, although not fixed or universal relationships. The study therefore contributes both a way of documenting bodily craft knowledge and a clearer understanding of what can, and cannot, be reliably observed in video-based material.
