Sammanfattning

Urbanization has significantly impacted smaller towns such as Skruv, a former mill village in Lessebo Municipality with 470 residents and approximately 70 abandoned buildings. This thesis examines the potential transformation of these vacant structures into community assets through participatory design and sustainable urban planning principles. The study employed field studies and semi-structured interviews with municipal stakeholders and residents to identify key challenges. Analysis of these findings, combined with theories of rural development and placemaking, informed a comprehensive revitalization proposal. The design solution focuses on three core interventions: · Adaptive reuse of existing structures · Strategic development of public spaces · Sustainable transport integration The proposal is visualized through detailed site plans and 3D representations, demonstrating how architectural interventions could enhance Skruv’s urban identity while addressing rural depopulation challenges. This case study contributes to the discourse on sustainable rural regeneration by presenting a methodological framework applicable to similar shrinking communities.
