Tourism as a global phenomenon can play an important role in safeguarding culturaltraditions, promoting economic sustainability and fostering intercultural understanding. However, it also brings risks such as the commodification and loss of authenticity in culturalpractices when adapted for global markets. This study examined how globalization-driventourism impacts cultural preservation, focusing on both its positive contributions andpotential challenges. Using a qualitative approach, this research gathered insights from tourists, tourismprofessionals and cultural advocates in Sri Lanka and Rwanda. Deductive thematic analysisidentified key themes, including (i) the role of tourism in connecting personal identity toheritage, (ii) fostering community engagement and (ii) balancing tradition with moderninfluences. The study also highlighted how technology supports cultural preservation throughdigital platforms while noting the risks of cultural misrepresentation. The findings reveal that tourism has a dual nature, supporting cultural resilience while posingrisks if not managed carefully. The study emphasizes the importance of communityinvolvement, sustainable tourism policies, and thoughtful use of technology to ensure culturalheritage is preserved. While the findings provide valuable insights, they reflect the specificcontexts of the regions studied, limiting their generalizability.
