Household consumption is an important component of the economic activity in Sweden aswell as in Europe. During the Covid-19 pandemic, household consumption was substantiallyaffected, and previous research suggests that these effects may have continued even after thepandemic. Consumption decisions are influenced by multiple factors within the economictheory, including income expectations, uncertainty, savings and additional external economicshocks. The purpose of this study is to investigate changes in household consumption after thecovid-19 pandemic compared to the period before the pandemic, and to examine if thosechanges have remained in the post-pandemic period. This study indicates that the householdconsumption decreased in Sweden during the pandemic compared to the years before.Moreover, the findings indicate that additional factors such as high inflation and energy crisismay have contributed to the decline in consumption, which might lead to a potential longterm decrease in domestic consumption in an integrated European economy. This analysissupports the economic theories presented in the study and contributes to previous research byindicating that changes in household consumption following the covid-19 pandemic havebeen more persistent than initially anticipated.
