Sammanfattning

In today's globalized world, where events and information spread globally, there is an increase in media consumption. However, how individuals are affected by media reporting on global risks has not been thoroughly explored. The purpose of this study is to examine how news about war affects students' sense of security. The study aims to deepen the understanding of how students in Sweden perceive their sense of security when news reports on ongoing wars around the world. Through qualitative interviews and the application of theoretical perspectives from Giddens' ontological security and Beck's risk society, the study highlights the complex effects that media reporting on global conflicts has on students. The findings indicate that students, who are often heavy consumers of digital media, experience an increased sense of insecurity and existential anxiety when exposed to news about war, even when the conflicts are geographically distant. Students with previous experiences of war handle these reports differently than those who have no direct connection to conflicts. The study also reveals that the way media reports on war influences students' perceptions of risk and safety in their everyday lives.
