Sammanfattning

This thesis explores the history of the flute’s connection to myths and spirits and how the composer André Jolivet aimed to describe the relationship between human and spirit worlds through his music. I’m researching Jolivet’s flute works ”Cinq Incantations” and ”Chant de Linos” and analysing compositional and instrumental techniques Jolivet uses to convey his spiritual ideas. The purpose of this work is to get a better understanding of flute’s role in spiritual practices historically and in context of classical music.
