Islamistisk radikalisering: En fallstudie av svenska myndigheters arbete och strategi mot våldsbejakande islamistisk radikalisering

This study aims to examine the national level measures implemented in Sweden to counter the threats posed by violent Islamist radicalization. The study will focus on two main government actors and their roles in countering this threat. These actors are the Swedish Security Service (Säkerhetspolisen) and the Center for Preventing Violent Extremism (Center mot våldsbejakande extremism). Moghaddam’s staircase model of radicalization will be used as a theoretical framework to examine if and how these two key actors address the different stages of the radicalization process. The study will be based on a qualitative singular case study where official documents, reports and relevant literature will be analyzed to identify strategies and efforts. The findings presented will show the multifaceted nature of Sweden’s approach which includes both preventative measures aimed at the early stages of radicalization, as well as the reactive measures aimed at disrupting immediate threats to national security. The analysis also reveals both strengths and challenges within this line of work, more specifically when it comes to collaboration across agencies. Lastly this study hopes to contribute to a deeper and better understanding of violent Islamist radicalization and its processes as well as the effectiveness of national strategies aimed towards it.
