This paper explores anti black racism and the exploitation of black woman migrant workers in Lebanon and how it manifests in the Kafala systems hierarchies. Due to the absence of race when analysing the Kafala system this paper aims to center racialization to unpack how the origins of the Kafala system has impacted the current system. This study is relevant for demonstrating the connection between human rights abuses and structural power hierarchies. Africanism, an intersectional and postcolonial theoretical framework will provide a foundation for the analysis. A mixed methodology will be applied to understand the Kafala system as a cultural phenomena. In this paper I argue that the specific othering of black women within the Arab context has a long history that predates Islam and that it needs to be addressed as a central part of the discussion.
