Sammanfattning

Introduction (the goal) - Lime-cement columns (LCC) are an established method forimproving the bearing capacity of soils with low strength. Despite their technicaleffectiveness, the use of LCC has raised environmental concerns, particularly regardingthe binders used cement and lime, which are known for their high carbon dioxideemissions. This thesis aims to assess the environmental impact of LCC from a life cycleperspective and to investigate alternative binders that can reduce climate impact withoutcompromising technical performance. Metod - The study is based on a combination of document analysis and interviews withindustry professionals. The document review includes prior research and regulatoryreports, while the interviews were conducted with geotechnical experts to gain insightinto practical applications and challenges. Data from previous projects are analyzed tocompare traditional LCC methods with alternative binders in accordance with Swedishstandards and guidelines. Analysis - the analysis shows that traditional LCC methods have a significant climateimpact, primarily due to the high emissions associated with cement production.Alternative binders, such as fly ash and slag, demonstrate potential to reduce this impactby up to 34% without compromising the structural performance of the columns. Theinterviews confirm a growing interest within the industry in implementing moresustainable solutions. Results - The results indicate that the use of alternative binders can be an effectivestrategy to reduce the environmental footprint of LCC. However, technical andeconomic barriers remain, including material availability and the need for furtherresearch to ensure long-term performance. The analysis highlights the importance ofbalancing environmental benefits with technical requirements and cost-efficiency. Discussion - This study outlines the opportunities and challenges of integrating moresustainable binders into LCC technology. A successful transition to more climatefriendly alternatives will require collaboration between researchers, industry, andregulatory authorities. Future research should focus on developing standards andguidelines for the use of alternative binders and evaluating their long-term performancein varying ground conditions.
