Sammanfattning

ABSTRACT Background: Almost half of Sweden's adult population reports sleep problems and the trend is pointing upwards. Sleep is a basic human need. The recommendation is 7–9 hours of adequate sleep per night to reduce the risk of contracting various public health diseases. Caffeine is used worldwide as a stimulant, and consumption has changed after the advent of energy drinks. Aim: To investigate the consumption of caffeinated beverages and sleep habits among adults and investigate possible associations between them. Method: To answer the purpose of the study, a quantitative survey was conducted with a cross-sectional design in which 100 working adults participated. Both descriptive and comparative analyses were performed. Results: The total daily caffeine consumption in this study population consisted primarily of coffee, averaging 2.31 units per day, followed by energy drink with 0.40 units per day, and then tea, averaging 0.37 units per day. Men consumed the most devices per day, while women rated their sleep quality as the highest. However, no significant associations were found between high caffeine consumption and hours of sleep or sleep quality. Conclusions: In this study, no association was found between caffeine intake and sleep habits. However, possible associations should be investigated further in a larger population study as caffeine intake increases, especially among the young population.
