This study investigates the experience of using image-generating artificial intelligence (AI) for concept art in the film industry, and its impact on the creative vision. This is examined using a method where qualitative data is collected through a survey, interviews and tests of two image-generating AI-tools, Midjourney and Fooocus. The results identify several challenges and concerns associated with the use of these tools, as well as AI in general within the industry. The findings reveal concerns about loss of jobs, diminished creativity, and how image-generating AI will affect the quality and originality of films. Despite this, there is a willingness to adapt to the technical advancements and changing landscape of the industry. A thematic analysis of the participants’ responses highlights various themes, such as easier communication of vision to other stakeholders and streamlining of the work process. The results demonstrate an overall positive attitude towards AI-generated concept art, and the potential of AI tools in the film industry is acknowledged. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the complex relationship between technology and creative expression within film production. While it highlights promising opportunities, including developing visual storytelling with image-generative AI, it also raises important questions and concerns about the future of the film industry.
