Sammanfattning

Background: Intimate partner violence constitutes a major public health problem. It represents a violation of human rights and results in negative health consequences. Women often seek health care without disclosing the violence. Aim: To illuminate how women with experience of domestic violence perceive the approach from healthcare professionals. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature review with a qualitative approach. Systematic literature searches were performed in PubMed and CINAHL. Ten qualitative studies were included following quality review. The data analysis was based on Braun and Clarkes thematic analysis. Result: Four themes were generated; Healthcare encounters that reinforce women’s exposure to violence, An inaccessible and disengaged healthcare encounter, Supportive treatment in healthcare encounters and Selective responses to the consequences of violence. The women described experiences of distrust, victim-blaming, lack of engagement and limited accessibility. Supportive, trust-building and respectful treatment enabled disclosure and access to support. Conclusion: The approach from healthcare professionals is crucial to women’s experiences of healthcare encounters. A supportive and person-centered approach contributes to reducing suffering and enables support. The findings highlight the need for increased competence, improved routines and research for women exposed to domestic violence.
