Sammanfattning

As artificial intelligence continues to advance in the field of music generation, its expansion into more niche subgenres has not been thoroughly examined. By investigating the overall perception of AI-generated bebop, we can gain insight into its current capabilities and identify areas in need of further development. Through an evaluation study, 41 participants assessed three AI-generated and three human-composed jazz pieces, without being informed of the order of appearance. Each excerpt was rated by a set of subjective criteria. This resulted in over 615 evaluations for AI-generated music and an additional 615 for human-composed music, serving as reference points for comparative analysis. The results suggest that AI-generated jazz excels at adhering to genre-specific formulas, often being perceived as authentic in structure. However, it falls short in conveying creativity, improvisation and emotional depth. Furthermore, by dividing the participants into groups based on their experience in the genre, we observe that individuals with high familiarity with jazz evaluated the AI-generated pieces more critically, both in comparison to less experienced listeners, and compared to humanely composed pieces. Those with limited jazz expertise tend to rate AI and human compositions similarly. This could indicate that AI-generated jazz has reached a level of sophistication where the average person, without particular knowledge in jazz, perceives it generally positive. Lastly, we affirm how the results of this study are limited in accuracy by its scope and participant size. Further exploration of the subject is suggested to further consider the results found in this study.
