Det orkestrala pianot : En studie om att reducera arrangemang för större jazzgrupper till pianotrio

This project investigates the possibilities and limitations of reducing arrangements written for larger ensembles, such as big bands and nonets, for piano trio. The main body of work in the project is a select number of arrangements by famous larger bands that get reworked for a piano trio and later presented in the form of a concert. Examples of orchestral piano playing opposed to a pianistic approach are presented and we get more in-depth examples of how to emulate different timbres, dynamics and styles on specifically ”The Star-Crossed Lovers” by Billy Strayhorn for the Duke Ellington orchestra, ”Choose Now” by Tadd Dameron, and Dave Brubeck’s ”The Duke”, arranged by Gil Evans. The result is a closer look on how different dramatic effects translate to piano trio, what parts of an arrangement can be excluded and still maintain the musical characteristics of the original score, and what performing the music in this medium can add to the arrangement.
