Målord i fokus : En analys av den explicita presentationen av ordförråd i EFL läromedel (åk 1–3)

Sammanfattning

The aim of this research is to explore the explicit presentation of target words in two Swedish textbooks for English as a foreign language (EFL) in years 1–3 (Skills 3, Magic 3), as well as what opportunity for developing vocabulary depth is provided in the accompanying workbooks. Research is conducted through a qualitative content analysis using Nation's model for components of word knowledge (receptive and productive aspects of form, meaning and use) and Danielsson and Selander’s model for working with multimodal texts (structure and interplay of semiotic modalities) as a theoretic framework. Results indicate a general underuse of semiotic modalities for the purpose of establishing word knowledge despite variations in spatial placements and congruence between text and image; semiotic modalities fill primarily stimulating and clarifying roles. Workbooks display a strong dominance of receptive assignments with few opportunities to apply productive knowledge, knowledge regarding word use is largely underrepresented. In conclusion, the chosen teaching materials display variation in presentation of target words and exercises for applying word knowledge but lack vocabulary depth which need to be supplemented with intentional target word recycling in addition to learning exercises training productive word knowledge.
