Urban densification has become a central strategy in Swedish urban planning as a way to promote sustainable urban development and reduce urban sprawl. At the same time, densification places increasing pressure on urban green spaces, which are expected to provide ecological, social and climate-related functions. The purpose of this study is to examine how green spaces are managed in relation to urban densification and how this affects the possibility of creating a functional and sustainable green structure in cities. The study also investigates how identified planning principles can be applied in the transformation of selected public spaces in Karlskrona. The study is based on a qualitative research approach combining literature and document studies, site inventories and semi-structured interviews. Site inventories were conducted in Karlskrona, Hyllie and Västra Hamnen to examine how green structures are integrated and function in different urban contexts. In addition, interviews were carried out with municipal planners in Malmö to gain professional perspectives on planning strategies, challenges and opportunities related to green structure in dense urban environments. The results indicate that urban green spaces provide multiple values simultaneously, including recreation, social interaction, biodiversity, climate regulation and stormwater management. However, the study also identifies conflicts of interest between urban development and the preservation of green structures. The findings show that successful integration of green spaces requires early planning, multifunctional solutions and a holistic understanding of green structure as a connected system rather than isolated green areas. Based on the empirical findings and theoretical framework, a design proposal was developed for three selected locations along a central urban corridor in Karlskrona: Järnvägstorget, Fisktorget and Chapmansplan. The proposal focuses on strengthening social, ecological and spatial functions through increased vegetation, improved connectivity, enhanced stormwater management and the creation of attractive public spaces.
