Sammanfattning

The purpose of this study is to investigate how social studies teachers work with controversialissues in social studies teaching. This with a specific focus om what didacticc considerations theteachers make in relation with the subjects conten, classroom interaction and the studentsemotional respons in the teaching of controversiall issues. The result in this study shows what social studie teachers understands controversial issues asemotionally charged, opinionated and topics who are relevant to society. Examples of such issuesare religion, sexuality, war or international conflicts. The teachers work with news covarage,disussions where the teachers want to stand for a fact-based teaching. This in order to create abroader perspective for the students and to creat a understanding that there are differentperspectives in the same issue. The study also shows opportunitties and challanges where the opporunities are about developingthe students discussion skills and their understanding on different perspectives. The study showedchallanges that was mainly strong opinions, conflicts and the balance between a open classrommand strong opinions among students. Finally the study showed that this is a complex subject whereit is an important part of the social studies teaching.
