Mellan säkerhet och rehabilitering : En kvalitativ studie om kriminalvårdsanställdas erfarenheter av arbetet med det dubbla uppdraget

Employees within the prison service have a dual mission that involves both maintaining security while striving for rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates. This balance involces a conflict demanding the work, where they must both handle and carry out security related tasks while being expected to build relationships and work rehabilitative with the clients. To navigate this complex balance, this essay is based on qualitative interviews with staff within the Swedish prison and probation services. The study analyzes how these two tasks are understood, prioritized and practically managed in an institutional context. The results show that staff experience security as something fundamental, while at the same time emphasizing that constant contact with clients is crucial for effective rehabilitation. This study also highlights how organizational conditions, such as staff resources and workload, are crucial to maintaining this balance, whilst time and resources for this are not always available.
