Mellan stöd och fusk: En studie om studenters etiska AI användning och behovet av institutionellt stöd

This study examines how university students perceive and ethically engage with generative AI-tools, particularly ChatGPT, within higher education. Using qualitative semi-structured interview, the research explores students’ motivation, usage pattern, and ethical reflections regarding these tools. The findings reveal a diverse range of ChatGPT, from assistance with structuring and understanding academic tasks to creating entire texts and solutions. Students highlight the tool’s potential for increasing efficiency and time-saving benefits, yet simultaneously express concern about its implications for academic integrity and the difference between acceptable support and unacceptable cheating. Interpreting the results through the lens of sociotechnical systems theory (STS), the study shows how ethical usage depends on the interplay between technological availability, individual decision-making, and institutional governance. The study contributes by emphasizing and highlighting students’ need for clear transparent institutional guidelines and contextualized ethical support for AI use in higher education, and proposes the integration of explainable AI-support (XAI) features into learning management systems (LMS) to provide accessible and contextual ethical guidance on AI use.
