Sammanfattning

This quantitative study explores the association between substance use, sexual victimization and the likelihood of reporting sexual offences among girls in 9th grade and 2nd year of upper secondary school. Using data from the 2024 Stockholm survey, logistic regression analyses were carried to investigate whether use of alcohol, inhalants or narcotics were associated with sexual victimization and reporting of sexual offences. Results showed statistically significant associations between all forms of substance use and higher odds of being exposed to sexual offences, especially among students in 9th grade. Alcohol intoxication was strongly associated with lower odds of reporting among the victims. The study applies Connell’s theory of gender and power and Goffman’s theory of stigma to analyse how structural gender norms and internalised shame may contribute to exposure of sexual offences, silence and underreporting. Findings highlight the vulnerability of girls who use substances, especially in contexts shaped by social stigma and hegemonic masculinity. The discussion emphasizes the need for early prevention, evidence-based support structures and sexual education to address this complex issue.
