Sammanfattning

Bårby borg is a prominent and well-known ringfort on Öland, constructed during turbulent times with its functions still being debated. Several metal finds were found during the excavations conducted in 2025 inside the ringfort. This thesis aim is therefore to investigate the ringfort’s utilization phases and functions from the newly excavated metal finds. Conservation and elemental analysis were carried out partly to produce information about the metal finds, partly to perform a method study including SEM-EDS and pXRF. The aim of this method study is to perform a comparative analysis between the results before and after conservation for each analytical instrument in order to investigate how the corrosion effects the results, and how well preliminary analysis before conservation represents an object’s metal composition. The metal finds consist of typical settlement finds and traces of metallurgy during the Migration Period and the Middle Ages. The preliminary analysis shows generally higher concentrations of corrosion products and lower concentrations of metal than the analysis after conservation. Preliminary analyses are also more effected by the decuprification and dezincification. Lastly, SEM-EDS is less appropriate for preliminary analysis than pXRF because of the instrument’s lower analysis depth.
