Sammanfattning

This thesis adresses the translation of an excerpt from Christine Anderlund’s book Det medicinska apoteket – Mage och tarm from Swedish into Arabic. The focus is on adapting a popular scientific medical text for a broader Arabic-speaking audience in Sweden, while preserving both the accuracy of the medical content and the educational tone of the text. The work is based on both semantic and communicative translation approaches and is complemented by translation procedures proposed by Peter Newmark, such as adaptation, transposition in the form of obligatory transposition, and transference. An additional procedure applied is transliteration. Particular challenges arose in handling complex medical terminology and adapting to cultural and linguistic differences between Swedish and Arabic. Through a combination of theoretical analysis and practical reflections, the study highlights the demands, choices, and strategic considerations that medical specialist translation imposes on the translator.
