This thesis examines how nature is given agency in the novels The Wolf Run (2021) by Kerstin Ekman and Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead (2009) by Olga Tokarzcuk. The aim is to investigate how agency is attributed to nature by the use of literary techniques, both narrative and stylistic, and how they are used to frame nature as an active participant in the narrative. Through a narratological analysis the thesis identifies strategies as focalization, distribution of causality, embedded narratives and styles of representation that contribute to portraying nature not merely as a background to the story, but as an agent within it. While both novels can be seen to challenge anthropocentric narrative structures, they do so through different aesthetic and narrative strategies. The study demonstrates how fictional literature plays a role in the reconfiguring the relationships between humans and nature and explores the potential of narrative techniques to question hierarchical worldviews where agency is attributed solely to human beings.
