In Recent years we have seen a growing emphasis on the importance of allowing animals to exhibit their natural behaviors when housed in captivity. This paradigm shift is particularly relevant in contemporary zoological settings, where the emphasis lies on education and the conservation of endangered species. zoos strive to create environments that mimic natural habitats, recognizing that this is crucial for the well-being of their inhabitants. This study investigates the utilization of four newly installed feeding devices and behavioral patterns among captive golden-bellied capuchin monkeys (Sapajus xanthosternos) to evaluate environmental enrichment strategies and welfare enhancement. Golden-bellied capuchins, native to Brazil, are renowned for their adeptness in using tools. Given the critical endangerment status of the capuchin population, conservation efforts are paramount, with zoos worldwide participating in relevant programs. Enrichment activities are integral to zoo animal welfare, addressing both physical and psychological needs. At Parken Zoo in Eskilstuna, Sweden, four enrichment devices were introduced to golden-bellied capuchins to assess their utilization across different hierarchical ranks within the group. Observations were made regarding agonistic, aggressive, and avoidance behaviors following the installation of the enrichments, aiming to inform better practices for health and welfare. During a six-day observation period, feeding device usage and the occurrence of flight and agonistic behaviors were documented. Results revealed that both highand low-ranking individuals engaged with the feeding devices, although dominance in usage was observed among the higher-ranking group. Flight behaviors predominated over agonistic behaviors, suggesting potential stress management strategies. These findings highlight the importance of tailoring environmental enrichment to accommodate social hierarchies and individual preferences among captive primates. This study emphasizes the necessity of implementing enrichment programs that prioritize the physical and psychological well-being of captive primates, alongside the importance of ethical and species-specific care. Insights gained from this study contribute to our understanding of primate cognition and behavior, facilitating the development of more effective enrichment initiatives in captivity. Furthermore, continuous evaluation and refinement of enrichment strategies are deemed essential to meet the needs of captive primate populations and ensure their long-term welfare.
