Sammanfattning

<p aria-level="1">Abstract Background: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that requires continuous self-care in daily life. Self-care is essential for preventing complications and maintaining health, but it can be experienced as challenging for many individuals. Aim: The aim was to describe adults’ experiences of self-care in type 2 diabetes in everyday life. Method: A literature review with a qualitative design and an inductive approach was conducted. Data was collected through systematic searches in the databases CINAHL and PubMed. The included articles were analyzed using qualitative content analysis according to Friberg’s five-step model. Results: The results showed six categories: adapting life to the disease, the importance of motivation for self-care, the importance of support from surrounding environment, cultural and religious factors influencing self-care, personal responsibility in managing type 2 diabetes, and the importance of information for self-care management. Support from relatives and healthcare professionals was identified as important for maintaining self-care routines, while lack of support could lead to difficulties in self-care. Cultural norms and religious beliefs also influenced individuals’ understanding and management of the disease. Conclusion: Self-care in type 2 diabetes is a complex process influenced by both individual and environmental factors. Nurses play an important role in supporting and guiding patients through person-centered care to strengthen their self-care ability. Keywords: Lifestyle changes, self-care, motivation, metabolic disease, perspective.
