Background A common complication after stroke is aphasia, which involves difficulties with communication. Communication is a central part of the encounter with others, and it is particularly important that it works in the encounter between nurse and patient. It is therefore of great importance that the nurse has knowledge of how to communicate with people with aphasia effectively and also creates a holistic picture of what it is like to live with aphasia, in order to enable person-centered care. Aim The aim was to shed light on people ́s experiences of living with aphasia after stroke Method This non-systematic literature review included 13 scientific articles, all with a qualitative approach. All articles were retrieved from the databases PubMed, CINAHL and Psycinfo using combinations of search terms, performed in block searches. The quality assesment used an assessment document from Sophiahemmet University that was revised based on Berg, Dencker and Skärsäter (1999) and William, Bathsenavi, Nilsson and Sandström (2016). A reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze and compile the results. Results The results were devided into two main themes: Consequences in relation to others and consequences in relation to oneself. Six subthemes were also identified: exclusion, participation, the importance of support and emotional reactions, changed identity, dvelopment of coping strategies. The result showed both positive and negative experiences of living with aphasia. Conclusions In order to provide good and person-centred care, knowledge is needed about the experiences of people with aphasia after stroke in everyday life and in healthcare situations. Their experiences can be seen as an aid to identify shortcomings in the healthcare encounter and what measures can be taken.
