Sammanfattning

Abstract Purpose of the study is to examine the reintegration of ex-offenders into society with a focus on support efforts from the Swedish Prison and Probation Service and civil society and the challenges that characterize the reintegration process. The study consists of both interviews, content analysis of texts and a WPR analysis of a final report designed by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, the Swedish Police Authority, the National Board of Institutional Care and the National Board of Health and Welfare - commissioned by the government in 2021 to develop a national dropout program to identify power relations and problem formulations in the text and critically review these. To conduct this research study, a qualitative research method has been adapted. By applying theoretical concepts such as stigmatization, power and social ties, the work highlights how negative attitudes, weak networks and bureaucratic barriers hinder resocialization. Special emphasis is placed on the role of stigma, where both structural and social stigma as well as self-stigma affect the individual's opportunities for a new life. The study shows that voluntary organizations, such as the Salvation Army and the Church of Sweden, are key actors in offering social support, community and practical help, which complements the efforts of the authorities. Success factors for re-socialization include strong social ties, individually tailored support interventions and a forgiving attitude from society, in line with Braithwaite's theory of reintegrative shame. The study also identifies the need for improved coordination between authorities, clearer legislation and national strategies to ensure equal support. The conclusion is that reintegration is a complex process where the individual's own motivation and society's ability to offer respectful support are crucial to reduce recidivism. Keywords: resocialization, ex-criminals, Prison and Probation Service, The Salvation Army, Church of Sweden, stigmatization, preventive measures, challenges, social support.
