Abstract: Background: Mental illness is a growing social problem that is becoming more common in the population. Today, registered nurses not only encounter patients with mental illness in psychiatric wards, but also in acute care and somatic ward. Research show that patients with mental illness experience poor treatment from health care professionals in contact with emergency care in form of stigma or preconceived notions. It is therefore important to probe registered nurses’ experiences in treating patients with mental illness, as the nurse’s treatment have a crucial role in the patient’s experience of care. Aim: The purpose of this literature study was to describe nurses in emergency care and their experiences of caring for patients with mental health problems Method: Literature study with descriptive design. The 12 articles which the results are based of were taken from Cinahl and PubMed via Medline. The included articles were analyzed with thematic method. Main result: The recurring theme from the results is the lack of knowledge about mental illness that nurses possess. The results were identified with two main themes; internal and external factors, with associated sub-themes.All these experiences influenced the care of patients with mental illness. Conclusion: Nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with mental illness in acute care were found to be difficult and complex. There were several critical factors that complicated the situation and the ability to provide equal care to patients with mental illness
