Background Mental illness is a global problem that affects people all over the world. Patients with suicidal thoughts or plans related to mental illness are found in all healthcare contexts, which means that nurses encounter these patients repeatedly throughout their professional lives. Meeting a patient who wants to end their life can be experienced as challenging by nurses. In order to create deeper knowledge about how nurses experience and are affected by these patient encounters, this literature review was conducted. . Aim The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of nurses working with suicidal patients. Method This study was conducted as a structured literature review with elements of the methodology used in systematic reviews. Data were collected from CINAHL, Pubmed and Psycinfo. A total of 13 articles were included and underwent analysis, employing articles of mixed method, qualitative and quantitative aproach. A deductive approach was employed. Results The results are based on Antonovsky's theory of SOC and the concepts of comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness. The results of this literature review indicate that nurses who encounter suicidal patients have a low degree of SOC according to Antonovsky's theory. Conclusions This literature review shows a clear connection between emotional impact and contact with suicidal patients. The emotional impact is expressed in feelings of inadequacy, stress, anxiety, depression and sleep difficulties, which affects nurses' well-being both in their professional and private lives and causes low SOC.
