Background Negative stress among nurses is a globally growing problem that can have both physical and psychological concequences for the nurse but also affect the quality of care and patientsafety. Aim The aim of this literature review is to shed light on nurses' experience of work-related stress and its consequences. Method This thesis is carried out as a structured literature review with elements of methodology used in systematic reviews. We searched the articles in CINAHL and PUBMED that was published between 2020 – 2025. A total of 14 qualitative articles were analyzed. Results Two main categories were identified showing that high workload, understaffing, lack of collaboration, and insufficient managerial support affect organizational conditions. Stress results in feelings of inadequacy with questioning of career choises, reduced patient safety, and psychological as well as physical reactions that affects both professional and private life. Conclusions Occupational stress is a widespread problem that contribues to high abseeteism and undderstaffing, which is a direct cause of largely high work-load that in the long run leads to a negative impact on patient care and patient safety.
