Sammanfattning

This study examines how subject teachers use and discuss fiction in teaching related to ethical issues, intercultural perspectives, and the school’s democratic and value-based mission. Using a qualitative approach, the study is based on three semi-structured interviews with teachers of Swedish and religious education in lower and upper secondary school. The aim is to explore how fiction and literary discussions can contribute to students understanding, reflection, and ability to take a position in relation to these issues, as well as to highlight the didactic considerations, opportunities, and challenges that the teachers identify in their work. The empirical material is analysed through thematic analysis. The results show that fiction and literary discussions can create opportunities for students to encounter different perspectives and reflect on ethical and democratic issues, but also that this work requires extensive didactic considerations from the teacher. In the final part of the thesis, the democratic potential of literature teaching is discussed in relation to the school’s value-based mission and today’s school context. The study therefore contributes to a deeper understanding of the possibilities and challenges of literature teaching in work related to democracy and intercultural understanding.
