Sammanfattning

This study examines whether slow media principles can be applied to TikTok’s short-form format, based on a content analysis of aesthetic and multimodal elements within lifestyle-related content on the platform. The study is based on theories of slow media, temporal logic, multimodality and aesthetics in relation to meaning-making and well-being. The aim is to investigate whether TikTok’s accelerated short-form format can be reinterpreted into a more low-intensity and reflective expression without losing its relevance within the platform’s visual trends. Methodologically, a quantitative multimodal content analysis of 200 TikTok videos within the lifestyle category was conducted. The analysis focused on tempo, sound, typography, camera movements, visual themes and environments. The results show that the content is characterized by high multimodal intensity, rapid editing and recurring aesthetic expressions. At the same time, visual and narrative elements were identified as possible to reinterpret through slow media principles. Through a creative process grounded in the analysis results and the study’s theoretical framework, eight TikTok videos were produced as design proposals demonstrating how slow media principles can be integrated into short-form content. The creative project combined established TikTok design elements with slower rhythms, simplified compositions and reduced visual stimulations. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that slow media principles can be implemented in short-form content through conscious design choices related to tempo, multimodality and visual structure. The results indicate that short-form media does not necessarily need to be characterized by acceleration, but can also be used to create space for reflection, presence and aesthetic meaning-making within digital media environments.
