Against the backdrop of the ongoing public debate about mobile phone bans in schools and in connection with the amendments introduced to the Education Act that give schools the right to regulate students' mobile phone use during school hours, the study examines how students themselves experience and justify their mobile phone use during school day. This paper explores the social motives behind mobile phone use among high school students in a school environment. The purpose of this report is to take a closer look at the motives behind mobile phone use among a group of high school students from their own perspectives. With the help of qualitative interviews with ten students from grades 7–9, their use of mobile phones, the most frequent activities, and their attitudes and reactions to the school's rules regarding mobile phone use are mapped. The results highlight three main themes. These are the role of mobile phones in students' lives, distractions and challenges, school rules and students' opinions. And show that students largely see mobile phones as a central tool for social interaction. Despite awareness of the potentially negative effects of mobile phone use, its impact on concentration and academic performance, most express a strong desire to have their mobile phone available. Especially in relation to social security and ease of communication. Students emphasize that the mobile phone is a means of maintaining social contact and interacting with friends, which also reflects a larger trend of digital socialization in their lives. The study points to a complex relationship between mobile phone use and social needs among young people, where the need for social interaction outweighs the insights that exist about the disruptive effects of mobile phones on learning and social skills. A mobile phone ban promotes study peace and the direct social interactions that take place in the physical space. Finally, the paper emphasizes the importance of not only focusing on restrictions on mobile phone use but also taking into account the social needs of students and creating environments that offer good alternatives to social interactions in the physical space.
