Forsmarks Kraftgrupp AB and other nuclear power plants in Sweden have been in operation for several decades, which means that large parts of their technical equipment are exposed to aging, so called technical obsolescence. Obsolete components can be both technically and practically difficult to replace, which can affect both operational reliability and the planning of maintenance in the long term in a nuclear power plant. When the technology ages, it gradually loses its functionality, at the same time as the demands on safety and operational reliability increase. A common way to mitigate the effects of obsolescence is to identify and manage risks at an early stage, for example to avoid prolonged maintenance periods or increased costs for urgent deliveries. By using indicators that signal risks at an early stage, actions can be taken before problems arise. The purpose of this work is to investigate how indicators support obsolescence management at Forsmark AB, and to what extent they provide a reasonable and representative basis for decision-making. The goal is also to contribute to an increased understanding of what technical obsolescence means within the nuclear power industry, especially for people who are not familiar with the subject. The work is based on literature studies, interviews with key persons internally, externally and internationally, as well as analysis of assigned data and information from the POMS system. The results show that the indicators have an important role in structuring and prioritizing actions, but that they do not give a complete picture of the technical condition. The conclusion is that the indicators should be seen as a complementary tool in the obsolescence management field rather than a direct solution themselves that calculate progress and point out issues, and that a proactive and systematic approach is crucial for handling technical obsolescence effectively.
