Sammanfattning

Background: Motivation is a central factor for adherence to home-based exercise programs prescribed by a physiotherapist. Previous research has mainly focused on older adults or mixed age groups, making young adults’ experiences important to explore. Objectiv: The aim of this study was to explore young adults’ experiences of what motivates them to perform home-based exercise programs prescribed by a physiotherapist. Method: A qualitative exploratory design was used. Five young adults aged 20–25 years participated in semi-structured interviews. The material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Results: The analysis resulted in four main categories: Personal driving forces and goals strengthen adherence, Emotional and bodily barriers complicate rehabilitation, The physiotherapist’s role is fundamental, and Exercise environment and external support are important for rehabilitation. The findings showed that meaningful goals, inner motivation, social support, exercise environment, and the physiotherapist’s approach influenced motivation and adherence. At the same time, frustration, uncertainty, and fear of movement could hinder rehabilitation. Conclusion: Young adults’ motivation to perform home-based exercise programs is influenced by several interacting factors. A person-centered physiotherapeutic approach that considers psychological, social, and environmental factors may contribute to increased motivation and adherence. Further research is needed to explore how these factors can be implemented in clinical practice to improve adherence to home-based exercise programs.
